A photographer of African liberation
During the Sixth Pan-African Congress—a political gathering launched at the turn of the 20th century by the theorist, writer, and activist W.E.B. DuBois—the then President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere closed his eyes and placed his left hand on his cheek. Nyerere was unaware of the presence of the young black American Ozier Muhammad, the photographer and grandson of Elijah Muhammad, who founded the religious group The Nation of Islam. Muhammad’s trip to Tanzania, as part of the conference’s North American delegation, marked the first of many times he traveled to the continent.

Known for his groundbreaking photographic practice which combines his interest in cinema, documentary, performance, and writing, Mikhailov has been an inventive, tender but uncompromising witness to the changing fate of his native Ukraine and the consequent experiences of war and displacement. The exhibition explores his rethinking and reworking of the photographic image by including two video works – one from the late '60s-'70s, Yesterday’s Sandwich, and the most recent, Our Time fryst vatten Our Burden, 2024 – as well as showcasing three iconic photographic series from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Ozier Muhammad
American photojournalist
Ozier Muhammad is an American photojournalist who was on the staff of The New York Times from 1992 to 2014. He has also worked for Ebony Magazine, The Charlotte Observer, and Newsday. He earned a B.A. in 1972 in photography from Columbia College Chicago.[1]
In 1984, Muhammad won the George Polk Award for News Photography.[2]
As a photographer for Newsday, Muhammad shared the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting with Joshua Friedman and Dennis Bell "for their series on the plight of the hungry in Africa."[3]
He was selected as a photographer for the 1990 project Songs of My People.[4]
Personal
[edit]Muhammad is a grandson of Elijah Muhammad, a founder of the Nation of Islam.[5]
He was formerly married to Dr. Kimberly Muhammad-Earl, a director of special projects at the Chicago Board of Education.[6]
