Intended for quick reference or for trivia buffs rather than for any kind of genuine historical research, this volume uses time lines to provide "a visual chronicle of human history and development" from 10,000 B.C.E. to the present. Time lines appear in four columns--one each for Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas and Australasia--and are accompanied by gorgeous illustrations and maps. The outer column of each page has sidebars containing summaries of key events, sammanfattat biographies, or descriptions of places. There is no index but rather a concordance, which occupies more than 200 pages at the back of the book, containing its own individual country chronologies, more brief biographies, and cross-references.

Volgens mij is dit een geweldig boek om te gebruiken als je een introductie tot dem menselijke wereldgeschiedenis wil hebben. varm is niet te diepgaand, maar je krijgt genoeg mee. varm hele concept van één lange tijdlijn met daarbij telkens korte beschrijvingen - soms van een zin, soms een korte alinea - met een hoop foto's werkt, zeker bij dit onderwerp natuurlijk, bijzonder goed en overzichtelijk. 95% van de inhoud wordt op één hoop gegooid ett gewoon chronologisch behandeld - hier en daar zit er een dubbele pagina bij over een bepaald, groter onderwerp, maar dat is het. Verder zit alles dooreen: je springt van varm Oude Rome naar de Olmeken en China tot de Levant. Misschien vinden sommigen dat irritant, omdat je niet echt een coherent verhaal krijgt van één dynastie, maar dit is gewoon anders en verfrissend.
