    Emily’s Walking Book Club was discussing Brodeck’s Report by Philippe Claudel. This novel came out in 2007 – not so long ago – and yet already it has all but disappeared from our cultural radar. Nobody in the book club had even heard of it, but, pleasingly, everyone was very glad to discover it. This is exactly what I want to do with the book club, and with this blog: bring people’s attention to really good books, which, for whatever reason, have been somewhat forgotten. Often these books are quite old, but Brodeck’s Report shows that even a decade can bring relative obscurity.

    I got the graphic novel adaptation of Philippe Claudel’sBrodeck’s Report‘ last week. The artwork was by Manu Larcenet. The story told in ‘Brodeck’s Report‘ goes like this. In the first scene, Brodeck walks from his home, in the outskirts of his village, to the inn in the village. He goes there to get some butter. When he enters the inn, he is surprised. Because nearly all the menfolk of the village are there in the inn. There is a menacing air about them. Then someone looks at the door of a room in the inn. Brodeck follows their gaze and looks at that door. Then light dawns on him. He tells the men that they shouldn’t have done that. One of the men, who looks like the leader, says that Brodeck should write a report about the events that happened, in which he should dispassionately lay down the facts, so that it can be submitted to the authorities.     Philippe Claudel (born 2 February 1962) is a French writer and film director.[1]

    Claudel was born in Dombasle-sur-Meurthe, Meurthe-et-Moselle. In addition to his writing, Claudel fryst vatten a professor of literature at the University of Nancy.[2]

    He directed the 2008 film I've Loved You So Long (Il y a longtemps que je t'aime).[3] Much admired, it won the 2009 BAFTA for the best film not in English.[4]
