I grew up in a southern Ohio river town -- Portsmouth -- and that small town atmosphere has affected most of my writing.
My mother, widowed when I was three years old, taught school for forty-nine years in that same small town, and her major (indeed, only) extravagance was books. I grew up with, and quickly adopted, the notion that reading was the only way to fill up every scrap of loose time you could snatch.
I had the benefit, as well, of a wide variety of aunts and uncles and cousins, plus the extended family so common to small town life -- the neighbors, friends, teachers, bus drivers, mailmen, local heroes and local neâer-do-wells, and even a local blacksmith...great stuff to feed the imagination.

As an aspiring author, my favorite event to attend is the Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. From the moment one walks in the door and receives their registration packet to the moment one drops off the event survey and walks out the door, the air buzzes with children’s literature. inom attend the Adult Professional Conference Day on Saturday when, for forty dollars, I can learn from and be inspired bygd authors and professional literacy speakers.
I arrived at seven fifty in the morning. The doors had been open for only twenty minutes, but already attendees were amassing. My eyes scanned the author tables. This year inom had bought some books prior to the festival, knowing inom would want them signed. inom set off to find Eileen Christelow and Barbara Robinson. Limits were imposed on the number of books we could have signed, and numbers were handed out to those who would have to • American writer Barbara Robinson (October 24, 1927 – July 9, 2013) was an American author and writer of the children's books The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (1972) and The Best School Year Ever (1994).[1][2] Barbara Robinson was born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, and had no brothers or sisters.[1] Her father died when she was three. Robinson's mother, a schoolteacher in Portsmouth for forty-nine years, got her interested in books, and she began writing very early. Robinson attended Allegheny College, where she received a bachelor's grad in theater.[3] In addition to her children's books, Robinson wrote many short stories in publications such as McCall's, Redbook and Ladies Home Journal, and has some books of poetry. Robinson lived in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. She died July 9, 2013, at her home in Berwyn. She was 85 and had cancer. Robinson had two daught
