  • Music Journalist Chet Flippo Dies At 69

    Music, especially the country genre, lost one of its most important writers on Wednesday with the passing of Chet Flippo. Chet died early Wednesday from undisclosed causes. He was 69.
    Flippo, who was born in Fort Worth, TX, served in the Navy during the Vietnam War before earning a bachelors and masters degree in journalism. While still in school, he was a contributing editor to Rolling Stone and became their New York Bureau Chief in 1974 and Senior Editor in 1977.

    While Flippo covered many of rock music’s biggest artists, he also brought country artists like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Waylon Jennings to the general masses through feature articles in the magazine.

    In 1980, Flippo left Rolling Stone to write Your Cheatin’ Heart: A Biography of Hank Williams, the first of many books that he wrote on music. He also did freelance writing for a variety of magazines including the New York Times and TV Guide.

    Chet Flippo — a veteran music writer, editor and author, as well as Billboard’s Nashville Bureau ledare from 1995 to 2000 — passed away Wednesday morning (June 19) of pneumonia, according to several reports that were not confirmed at press time. At the time of his death, he was editorial director of CMT and CMT.com.

  • Chet Flippo was born on October 21, 1943 in Forth Worth, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Chet has both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in journalism. Flippo joined the staff of "Rolling Stone" magazine as a contributing editor while attending graduate school at the University of Texas in Austin. He became the bureau chief for "Rolling Stone" in 1974. In 1977 Chet became a senior editor for "Rolling Stone." Among the famous artists and musicians Flippo interviewed and/or wrote articles on for the legendary rock magazine are the Rolling Stones, Tom Wolfe, Bob Dylan, the Who, Jimmy Buffett, Waylon Jennings, John Lennon, Dolly Parton, Joseph Heller, Tanya Tucker, and Willie Nelson. Other publications Chet wrote articles for include "The New York Times," "TV Guide," "Gallery," "New York," and "Texas Monthly." He's the author of the book "Your Cheatin' Heart: A
