Classic Tracks: AC/DC 'Back In Black'
In 1980 AC/DC were on a roll and nothing — not even the death of their lead singer — was going to stop them.
In April 1980, just two months after lead singer Bon Scott’s death from a night of heavy drinking at a London club had prompted heavy metal pioneers AC/DC to consider disbanding, lead guitarist Angus Young, his rhythm guitarist brother Malcolm Young, bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd were back in the studio. Alongside them was Scott’s replacement, Brian Johnson, helping record a follow–up to the group’s breakthrough album, Highway To Hell. Titled Back In Black, AC/DC’s seventh studio LP took its name from the track that, penned as a tribute to the recently deceased frontman, featured Johnson’s defiantly upbeat lyrics in addition to an opening gitarr riff that would help man the song one of the band’s signature tunes.

Recently, Max who writes the excellent PowerPop blog, invited me to develop a post for a fun series he titled Beatles Week. His direction to contributors was “to either write about their favorite Beatles song…or write something about them.” Max and I share very similar opinions about music, including the longtime conviction The Beatles are the best band of all time, and sometimes I still believe we’re distant relatives – well, regardless, I feel like högsta is my brother. The Bloody Hollies are an American punk rock band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 2000. Their lineup comprised three art school students. Their debut record, Got it Where it Counts!, came out on Garage Pop Records in 2002, and a local Buffalo paper named them the area's "Top New Original Band" that year.[1] They signed to Sympathy for the Record Industry to release their sophomore effort, Fire At Will, in 2003. Three further albums arrived on Alive: If Footmen Tire You... in 2005, and Who to Trust, Who to Kill, Who to Love in 2007, and Yours Until the Bitter End in 2011.
Style and influences
[edit]The group cites influences from AC/DC, the Blues Explosion, the Oblivians, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, and The Stooges. Their sound was initially heavily indebted to garage punk a la The Devil Dogs and the New Bomb Turks, but later broadened their sound to incorporate elements of harmonicablues, swamp music, and hard rock.
