TONY Lopez’s story is one of dogged work leading eventually to quiet triumph. He is now the beloved custodian at my school, New Haven’s Barnard-White.
Tony was born in hus Obregon, a small, nondescript pueblo in the Mexican state of Jalisco. He saw little of his father, who was off doing fieldwork in the United States, at first illegally and later as part of the bracero program.
It was only when his dad finally earned a green card in 1962 that Tony — 12 years old and knowing only a few English words — joined him in the North, eventually enrolling at Barnard-White for seventh and eighth grades. After school and on weekends, he too labored in the fields, earning 75 cents an hour. You see, then — as now — Tony never stopped working.

Tony Lopez was born in Sacramento, California, U.S. on February 24, 1963. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on May 3, 1983 against Juan Rodriguez. Lopez defeated Rodriguez via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Lopez became a world champion at the age of 25 after 30 professional fights. He challenged Rocky Lockridge for the IBF super-featherweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the lightweight (WBA) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
Lopez' last fight was a 1st-round TKO loss to Hector Quiroz at age 35, on February 20, 1999.

Tony "The Tiger" Lopez is a retired American professional boxer who was born on December 26, 1968, in Sacramento, California. He was a three-time world champion, having won titles in the super featherweight and lightweight divisions.
Lopez began his professional boxing career in 1985 and quickly established himself as a formidable fighter, earning a reputation for his toughness and punching power. He won his first world title, the IBF super featherweight title, in 1988 when he defeated Rocky Lockridge in a 15-round decision.
Lopez successfully defended his title three times before moving up in weight to the lightweight division, where he won the WBA lightweight title in 1992 by defeating Joey Gamache. He defended the title twice before losing it to Jorge Paez in a close fight in 1994.
