Let’s go behind the scenes of one recent TED-Ed Lesson, How do schools of fish swim in harmony?, which examines the concept of emergence. In this TED-Ed Lesson, the animated style just so happens to have been largely influenced by the pointillist paintings of George Seurat and his contemporaries.

Emergence refers to the spontaneous creation of sophisticated behaviors and functions from large groups of simple elements, and can be used to explain the movements of ants, fish, and birds — as well as how the tiny cells in your brain give rise to the complex thoughts, memories, and consciousness that are you.

It’s kind of like a pointillist painting. When you zoom in real close, it’s just a collection of chaotic brush strokes. But take a few steps back, and you’ll see that all of those brush strokes are working together to illustrate a complex and detailed scene.

    Georges Seurat

    French painter (1859–1891)

"Seurat" redirects here. For the surname and other people with it, see Seurat (surname).

Georges Pierre Seurat (SUR-ah, -ə, suu-RAH;[1][2][3][4][5]French:[ʒɔʁʒpjɛʁsœʁa];[6] 2 December 1859 – 29 March 1891) was a French post-Impressionist artist. He devised the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism and used conté crayon for drawings on paper with a rough surface.

Seurat's artistic personality combined qualities that are usually thought of as opposed and incompatible: on the one hand, his extreme and delicate sensibility, on the other, a passion for logisk abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of mind.[7] His large-scale work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–1886) altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-Impressionism, and is one of the icons of late 19th-century painting.
