John Lewis Krimmel’s images of the streets and citizenry of contemporary Philadelphia are the earliest genre scenes, or pictures of everyday life, produced in and about America. Krimmel was born Johann Ludwig Krimmel in Ebingen in the southern German duchy of Württemberg. As a young man he worked as a commercial clerk and spent some time in England, where he may have learned to paint in watercolors. In , Krimmel immigrated to Philadelphia to join his older brother in business. About this time, he learned to paint miniature portraits from Alexander Rider (active –), a German artist with whom he had traveled from Europe.
Krimmel arrived in Philadelphia when the city, then America’s largest and most prosperous, was the young nation’s cultural and intellectual capital. He soon left his brother’s business to establish himself as a painter of portraits, both miniature and full-size, while drawing from casts of classical statuary at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine

John Lewis Krimmel (May 30, July 15, ), sometimes called "the American Hogarth" was America's first painter of genre scenes. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Philadelphia in and soon became a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Initially influenced by Scotland's David Wilkie, England's William Hogarth and America's Benjamin West, he soon turned to direct observation of life for his genre scenes. He was among the first artists in America to portray free blacks, such as in Black People's Prayer Meeting (). Among his still frequently reproduced paintings are Fourth of July, Center Square (/12) and Election Day (), both filled with lively characterizations of scores of crowd members. Krimmel died in a swimming accident at the age of Among the prominent American artists influenced by Krimmel's work are William Sidney Mount, George Caleb Bingham, and Thomas Eakins.
